RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.
The location, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in central Syria.
"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of approach shafts down to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This strike shows British leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.
UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey said. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate militants who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."
During December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "massive strike" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The U.N. estimates IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
